I have been wondering for a while now about both the panic and the excitement surrounding artificial intelligence. I can’t help but notice that, in many ways, we have already been trained to think “artificially” for generations. Just look at our outdated schooling systems, where the development of critical and creative ways of thinking is neglected. We are taught to think inside the box, to avoid questioning authorities and teachers: the risk of punishment or exclusion has always been too high. We’re encouraged to comply with the average, to learn by rote, and to follow the same patterns as everyone else, rather than developing the essential skills of critical thinking, creative exploration, respectful debate, experimentation, or innovation.

And yet, I hear voices warning that AI will disrupt the job market, making many human roles redundant. There is some truth to this, but let’s be honest about the real reason:

AI is simply an extension of the algorithmic, standardized system we’ve already created and internalized.

The speed of technological advancement today is so rapid that it’s nearly impossible for many of us to keep up, let alone ensure that we’re all adapting at the same pace. Let that sink in for a second.

We, speaking broadly here to illustrate the point, have, over generations, established an algorithmic way of thinking that, rather than fostering genuine human growth, actually risks making us irrelevant. When you combine that with technological algorithmic thinking, the problem only accelerates. I’m not saying that all of this is entirely wrong, just that the imbalance will cost us more than we can imagine, and the time to act is now.

So the question is: What can we do about it?

Here’s a thought:

Let’s move from AI: artificial intelligence to AI: artistic intelligence.

Let’s champion the uniquely human abilities that no algorithm can replicate: curiosity, imagination, empathy, playfulness, creative risk-taking, and authentic collaboration.

Here are a few ideas for cultivating Artistic Intelligence:

  • Prioritize creativity and experimentation in education and daily life.
  • Encourage critical questioning and respectful debate and don’t settle for easy answers.
  • Foster spaces where “failure” (to fail means: first attempt in learning) is seen as a necessary part of growth and learning.
  • Value diverse perspectives and the power of collective imagination.
  • Practice “beginner’s mind”: approach challenges as opportunities for wonder and discovery.
  • Support artistic expression in all its forms, across every age and community.

Let’s start a conversation:

What are your ideas for cultivating Artistic Intelligence in the age of AI?
