Recently, I asked in a few online communities if there was anyone who plays music and would be able to deliver a short concert in Davos in January 2025. The number of messages I received after the call was huge – from pianists, singers, jazz musicians, DJs, and bands of all kinds, to make-up artists. People, with or without financial expectations, were bringing tons of ideas and resources to make this happen.

I was STUNNED.

  • I didn’t expect this type of response. I waited for a few days and then responded to everyone.
  • I didn’t know that there were so many artists in the groups that I considered more “business” oriented.
  • I started to wonder, asked around, and discussed with others the topic of being creatives from all walks of life, and learned.

And here is what I learned:

  • Being an artist of any kind comes with facing a variety of challenges – being misunderstood by one’s environment, lack of financial certainty, etc., to name just a few.
  • Many artists, even with great accomplishments, don’t seem to receive the recognition and support they deserve. They often struggle to make ends meet, despite their significant contributions to culture and society.
  • Many places cut financial support for art and artists because art itself is not seen as bringing immediate value or is not considered a necessity in daily life. (Really?!)

And now imagine:

  • A world without images, words, and sounds. Your favorite movie, the songs you listen to during dates with your loved one, the family pictures – all are gone.
  • A world that is gray, black and white, without its soul and meaning – because that is what art does: it brings meaning and perspective into our lives. It is the golden thread bringing things together.
  • A life devoid of stories and imagination. Without novels, poems, and plays, we lose the narratives that inspire us, teach us, and allow us to escape into other worlds.

I wonder if we can just individually and collectively decide to support creatives the same way we support new construction sites, new AI tools, or the development of new weapons (the need for which I always question). What if we could replace weapons with brushes and pencils? What if we could, once and for all, decide that art itself is equally as important as anything else in this world and start paying creatives what they truly deserve for their work?

It might sound philosophical, but I know that it is possible. And thankfully, there are a few great actors making this happen. One of them is Fairpicture.

Art is not just a luxury; it is a fundamental part of human existence. It shapes our identities, our cultures, and our understanding of the world. Without art, we lose a vital means of expression and connection.

Supporting artists is not just about financial fair contribution; it’s about valuing the role they play in society. By investing in art, we invest in the very fabric of our communities. Art fosters empathy, encourages critical thinking, and brings people together across divides.

Imagine if businesses, governments, and individuals all took steps to nurture creative endeavors. What innovations could arise from such collaborations? What societal issues could be addressed through the lens of creativity?

Organizations like Fairpicture are leading the way by providing platforms for photographers and videographers to receive fair compensation. They bridge the gap between creators and audiences, emphasizing ethical practices and mutual respect.

Let’s challenge the notion that art is a secondary concern. Let’s recognize that supporting art is supporting humanity itself. By uplifting creatives, we enrich our lives and pave the way for a more vibrant, thoughtful, and compassionate world.
