This diptych is part of a series which involves the use of gesture, text and hard edge to produce a potent image by chance. Once certain images appeared to be a raft on some troubled waters I immediately thought of lines of Edward Lear’s poem ‘The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat. They took some honey and plenty of money wrapped up in a five pound note’. But this happy excursion is not mirrored in the painting as the occupants and displaced persons seem to be heading like so many migrants and to turbulent waters. Life is not so carefree on planet earth as the 19th century Edward Lear poem suggests.
