Flowniversum by Yasmine Mahmoudieh
Last year, the Design Miami Basel was graced with an awe-inspiring exhibition titled “Flowniversum.” This installation, a reflection on the flow of life and the universe, made a profound statement about environmental conservation and climate change.
At the heart of “Flowniversum” were innovative 3D-printed designs crafted from recycled plastic. These creations were more than mere art; they symbolized a purifying wave against oceanic pollution. The exhibition’s primary attraction was the transformation of harmful plastic waste into extraordinary design objects and furniture, representing hope and renewal.
A standout feature of the exhibit was the inclusion of two “Flow Chairs,” part of a limited edition series of twelve. These chairs have earned acclaim, securing awards like the if design award, the SIT award, and a finalist spot in the Rossano Orlandi Plastic Award. Two of these exclusive chairs are integrated into each of the three available editions of the complete Flowniversum installation.
Further enhancing the allure of Flowniversum is a captivating NFT series. This digital artwork comprises four images that dynamically evolve, illustrating the metamorphosis of floating ocean plastic into elegant vases. This transformation echoes the exhibition’s theme of turning environmental threats into beautiful design.
The architecture element of Flowniversum, demonstrated through 3D-printed walls from recycled plastic, opens possibilities for sustainable building and design, pointing towards an eco-friendly architectural future.
“Flowniversum” stands as a testament to the power of art in environmental activism, marrying aesthetics with a profound ecological message, and showcasing the transformative impact of design on our world.
Turn me by Yasmine Mahmoudieh
This versatile piece of furniture can transform from a stool to a table to a bench. It is 3D printed from recycled plastics, underscoring our commitment to environmental sustainability. Its flexible design makes “Turn Me” perfect for both indoor and outdoor use, and it can be adapted for residential or commercial purposes.
“Turn Me” has gone through rigourous processing and printing prototyping to develop a multi – functional piece of furniture.
Metamorphosis by Yasmine Mahmoudieh
Transforming the global threat of ocean plastics through architectural innovation and integrating future possibilities of the ancient mycelium.
This collaboration re-imagines a solution to past and current issues (ocean plastic) and looks towards the future of material innovation (mycelium). Mycelium is the ‘root network’ of mushrooms, which acts as a natural glue to bind biomass. It grows through the biomass and functions simultaneously as a growth substrate and a biocomposite matrix. Different organic residual streams such as hemp shives, toilet paper residues or other agricultural waste can be used as substrate. Therefore, mycelium biocomposites are totally natural, non- toxic, biological materials which can be grown locally and can be composted after usage.
“Metamorphosis” at the Venice Biennale is a groundbreaking installation that builds upon the Flowuniversum project, showcasing the innovative use of 3D-printed recycled plastics and mycelium for environmental solutions. This visionary project aims to revolutionize architectural and design methodologies by promoting sustainable materials, demonstrating a commitment to tackling ocean plastic waste, and exploring the potential of mycelium in design. With ambitions to found a company specializing in 3D printing these materials in Italy, the project represents a significant step towards sustainable design practices, enhanced by augmented reality experiences to minimize waste and engage audiences in meaningful ways.
