Huang Min (b. 1975, Tongjiang, Sichuan Province) is a Beijing-based painter whose work explores contemporary life in China through powerful figurative techniques and a profound engagement with civil rights and social realities.
Huang Min graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute with a bachelor’s degree in 1998, and later earned her master’s degree from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 2006. Throughout her academic and professional career, she has been recognized with multiple awards, including the First Prize of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (1998), the Bronze Award at the National Stars Exhibition (1998), the First Prize for graduate work at CAFA (2006), and the “Wang Jialian Oil Painting Scholarship” (2006). In 2016, she was honored with both the “Academic Award” and the “Public Welcome Award” at the 3rd Nanjing International Art Exhibition.
Huang Min’s paintings are characterized by a deep reflection on both the broader Chinese social landscape and the intimate realities of specific regions. Her work focuses on the living conditions, struggles, and desires of ordinary people in contemporary China. While her subject matter evolves over time, a consistent thread in her practice is a growing awareness of civil rights issues, which she expresses with simple yet powerful figurative language. The formal richness and variety of materials in her work add further depth and resonance.
Curator Du Xiyun described Huang Min’s practice as follows:
“In Huang Min’s paintings, there are both thoughts on China as a whole and specific observations on a specific region. Her works focus on the living situation and desires of ordinary people in China, and the subject matter will change periodically, but she is more and more conscious of finding problems from the perspective of contemporary civil rights, and expresses them with simple and powerful figurative techniques. The work is strong and powerful. Formal language and materials are rich and varied.”
Her recent exhibitions include the 2025 Cairo Extraordinary Biennale Echoes of Unseen Stones in Water in Cairo, Egypt; her solo exhibition Shards and Panorama at AAIE Contemporary Art Center in Rome (2024); Underground Notes · Suffering at Kwai Space in Beijing; Artist’s Hand Books: Pages of Refuge at the American Cultural Institute in Rome; and Respective Arcadia, a group exhibition of female artists at East Art 6 Art Space. Through her evolving body of work, Huang Min continues to challenge, document, and poetically reimagine the everyday lives of people in a rapidly transforming world.
Wish for the future: To continue creating consistently, with the hope that my work will keep evolving and surpassing itself. I also look forward to connecting with more like-minded individuals along the way.
