Rex Matthew Dixon is a British-born painter whose career spans more than five decades, marked by a deep commitment to gestural abstraction infused with figurative overtones. Born in London in 1939, Dixon trained at several prestigious art institutions across England, including the School of Art in Newton Abbot, South Devon, Stourbridge College of Art (where he earned his BA in Fine Arts in 1971), and Birmingham Polytechnic, where he completed a Teaching Diploma in Art Education in 1972.

After several years teaching in the painting department at the New University of Ulster in Belfast, Dixon relocated to Jamaica in 1985 to join the faculty at the Edna Manley College for the Visual and Performing Arts. During his twelve years in Jamaica, he held numerous solo exhibitions both locally and internationally, and his work was acquired by the National Gallery of Jamaica as well as many private collections.

In 1997, Dixon transitioned to full-time painting, a decision that launched a new era of creative exploration. His extensive travels with his wife, Professor Patricia Mohammed, through the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, North America, and Asia have continuously informed and energized his artistic practice. Since 2001, he has lived and worked in Maracas Valley, Trinidad, where he maintains a vibrant studio practice.

Dixon’s work is characterized by an intuitive, gestural approach directly onto canvas, blending abstraction with echoes of the human figure. His dynamic compositions reflect a lifetime of artistic inquiry, global experiences, and a profound sensitivity to place, memory, and cultural intersection. Learn more here, here and here.

My vision for the future is that we would not slide into fascism and environmental chaos and emerge from the current challenges of the world to allow freedom of expression in the arts and in everyday life. That the artist's images and imagination become the more dominant voice for shaping futures.
